Beginner's Guide to Overseeding a Lawn
This video walks you through everything you need to get started with overseeding, from basic tools already in your shed to professional options for any budget.
Whether you're completely new to lawn care or need a refresher, this guide breaks down the entire process into simple, manageable steps. You'll learn what equipment you actually need (spoiler: you probably already own most of it), the best techniques for applying seed, and how to get professional results without professional prices.
AVOID These STUPID Mistakes Overseeding Your Lawn
This video kicks things off with a list of the most common (and costly) mistakes people make when overseeding. Learn what not to do before you waste time and money.
From overusing seed to picking the wrong time of year, these mistakes can ruin your results. Save yourself the frustration by watching this first. It could be the difference between a lush lawn and a patchy disappointment.
The Biggest MYTH in Lawn Care Exposed
Is everything you've been told about lawn care wrong? This video exposes one of the biggest myths that's stopping your grass from thriving.
You've probably heard this advice a hundred times, but it's actually holding your lawn back. Once you understand the truth, you'll see why your overseeding efforts haven't been delivering the results you expected.
Don't Miss This ONE Important Step When Overseeding
Skipping this step could mean your grass seed won't germinate properly. Watch to make sure you get it right.
This single step makes the difference between a seed that sprouts successfully and a seed that sits on top of your lawn doing nothing. It's easy to miss if you don't know about it, but once you do, your germination rates will improve dramatically.
10 STUPID Mistakes to AVOID Overseeding Your Lawn
Even if you follow expert advice, these hidden pitfalls can still sabotage your results. Here's how to dodge them all.
This comprehensive list covers everything from preparation errors to aftercare mistakes. Some of these might surprise you. They're the kind of things that seem harmless but can completely derail your overseeding project. Watch this before you start and save yourself the headache.
Can You Still Overseed? Watch Before It's Too LATE!
Late to the party? Watch this before seeding. Timing is everything, and this could save your lawn (and your money).
There's a window for successful overseeding, and once it closes, you're wasting your time and seed. This video helps you determine whether you're still within that window or should wait until spring. You'll learn about soil temperature, establishment time, and how to make the call for your specific situation.
How to Look After Your Newly Seeded Lawn
Overseeding is just the beginning. Now it's time to nurture your new grass. Here's how to keep it alive and thriving.
The first few weeks after overseeding are critical. Too much water, too little water, mowing too soon, walking on it at the wrong time, any of these can undo all your hard work. This video provides the complete aftercare routine to ensure your new grass establishes properly and fills in bare patches.
After your grass has been mown twice, feeding becomes important. Our Autumn Fertiliser (for September/October overseeding) or Spring Fertiliser (for spring overseeding) helps strengthen new grass and encourages healthy root development.
What Is the Best Thing to Cover New Grass Seed With?
What's the best thing to cover grass seed with? This video tests different options and it even includes a smell test! (The things I do for videos!)
From compost to topsoil to specialist seed coverings, we test them all to see what actually works best for germination, moisture retention, and ease of use. Some of the results might surprise you, and you'll save money by knowing which expensive options aren't worth it.
Common Overseeding Questions
When is the best time to overseed my lawn?
Early autumn (September to mid-October) is optimal for overseeding in the UK. Soil is still warm from summer, encouraging quick germination, whilst cooler air temperatures reduce water stress. Grass establishes strongly before winter, then explodes with growth in spring.
Spring (March to May) is the second-best window. Germination is reliable and grass establishes before summer heat arrives. Avoid summer (too hot and dry) and late autumn/winter (soil too cold for germination). If you miss the autumn window, wait until spring rather than forcing it in poor conditions.
How much grass seed should I use when overseeding?
For overseeding existing lawns, use 15-20 grams per square metre (roughly half the rate for establishing new lawns from scratch). Over-seeding wastes seed and money, whilst encouraging disease by creating overcrowded conditions where seedlings compete for light, water, and nutrients.
For bare patches or heavily thinned areas, increase to 25-30 grams per square metre. Measure your lawn, calculate seed needed, then apply it evenly using a spreader or by hand. Most people overestimate how much seed they need. A little goes further than you think when applied properly.
Do I need to scarify before overseeding?
Light scarification helps but aggressive scarification isn't necessary for overseeding. A light rake-over to remove surface debris and create some soil exposure improves seed-to-soil contact. This is sufficient for most domestic lawns.
Heavy scarification (the kind that tears out thatch and leaves the lawn looking devastated) is only needed if thatch exceeds 15mm or if you're doing a full renovation. For standard overseeding to thicken thin grass, a spring-tine rake or light scarifier pass is enough. Save the aggressive work for dedicated renovation projects.
Should I cover grass seed after spreading it?
Covering seed improves germination by retaining moisture and protecting seed from birds. A light top-dressing with sieved compost, fine topsoil, or sharp sand (2-3mm layer) works well. This isn't essential for success, but it helps, especially in dry weather or areas with heavy bird activity.
If you're overseeding a small area or have time for proper watering, covering is less critical. For larger areas or if you can't water daily, covering significantly improves results. The material doesn't need to be expensive. Basic compost or topsoil from a garden centre is perfectly adequate.
How long until I can walk on newly overseeded grass?
Avoid walking on newly seeded areas for at least 2-3 weeks after germination, longer if possible. Seedlings are fragile, and foot traffic damages young roots and compacts soil around them. After the second mowing (usually 4-6 weeks post-seeding), grass is robust enough for light traffic.
Full durability takes 8-12 weeks as root systems mature. If you must cross seeded areas during establishment, use planks to distribute weight and avoid repeatedly walking the same path. Patience during this period makes the difference between patchy, weak grass and a dense, resilient lawn.
🌱 Feed Your Newly Overseeded Lawn
After your grass has established (2 mows completed), proper feeding helps new grass thicken and mature. Our seasonal fertilisers provide exactly what your lawn needs at the right time.
