This is an estimate for guidance only. Different seed types have different recommended rates, so always read the label or contact your seed supplier for the correct rate. It's worth ordering a little extra for edges and bird losses.

💡 Overseeding Tips

Best results come from overseeding in spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) when soil is warm and moist. Scarify or rake first, mow short, and keep the seed moist until established.

Understanding Overseeding

🌱 What is Overseeding?

Overseeding is the process of sowing grass seed directly into an existing lawn without tearing up the turf. It thickens thin lawns, fills bare patches, and can introduce improved grass varieties to your lawn.

📅 When to Overseed

The best times are spring (March-May) after the frosts locally to you have passed, or autumn (September-November) when soil temperatures are 10-20°C and before winter frosts. Avoid summer heat and winter cold when germination is poor.

📊 Typical Seed Rates

Rates vary by seed type. Ryegrass mixes: 35-50 g/m² (can handle higher rates). Fine fescue mixes: 25-35 g/m². Bent grass: 5-10 g/m² (very fine seed). Always check your bag for the recommended rate.

🔧 Preparation

Scarify or rake your lawn first to remove thatch and create seed-to-soil contact. Mow short (but don't scalp) so seed can reach the soil. Consider aerating compacted areas.

💧 Aftercare

Keep the seed moist but not waterlogged until germination (7-21 days depending on conditions). Avoid heavy foot traffic and delay mowing until new grass is 5-7cm tall.

🎯 Getting Good Results

Good seed-to-soil contact is essential. After spreading, roll the lawn or tread it down to press seed into the soil. Seed left loose on the surface won't germinate well.

🌱 About Grass Seed

We use BS Premier Lawn Grass Seed throughout our videos. That's from our friends at Boston Seeds, who sponsor the Premier Lawns YouTube channel. We don't sell grass seed at iGrow Carpet - we focus purely on fertilisers - but Boston Seeds are our go-to recommendation for quality seed.
