🌱 Getting Started with Lawn Fertiliser

New to lawn care? Start here. These questions cover the basics - from choosing your first product to understanding if our feeds will work on your lawn type.

I've never used lawn fertiliser before - where do I start?

Great question! Start with whichever seasonal feed matches the current time of year - Spring Starter Plus for spring, Summer feed for summer, or Autumn feed for autumn.

Your quick start guide:

  1. Use our free Lawn Measurement Tool to work out exactly how much you need
  2. Pick up a fertiliser spreader (we have guides on choosing the right one)
  3. Apply your feed on a dry day
  4. Water it in within 48 hours

Don't worry - it's much easier than you think!

When can I start using iGrow Carpet fertiliser?

You can start at any time of year. Just choose the feed that matches the current season - there's no "wrong" time to begin looking after your lawn.

How do I know how much fertiliser I need?

Use our Lawn Measurement Tool - it calculates exactly how much you need based on your lawn size.

Will iGrow Carpet work on my type of lawn?

Yes! All our products work on every lawn type - clay, sandy, loamy, or anything in between.

You might see companies claiming their fertiliser is "specially formulated for clay soil" or "designed for sandy lawns," but that's mostly marketing. The truth is, a good quality slow-release feed works brilliantly on all soil types.

The real secret is using the right amount at the right time - and we've got that sorted for you.

📅 Feeding Schedule and Timing

Timing is everything! Learn when to feed, what happens if you're early or late, and how to fit lawn care into your busy schedule.

⚡ Quick Reference

Seasonal Feeds
Apply every 10-12 weeks
Spring, Summer, Autumn feeds
How often should I feed my lawn?

Roughly every 10-12 weeks for consistently healthy grass throughout the growing season.

Our programme is designed to fit around your life - perfect for busy people who still want a beautiful lawn without the hassle.

What happens if I feed too early?

If you feed a bit early (before the 10-week mark), your grass might grow faster and you'll need to mow sooner than planned. It won't harm your lawn, but try to leave at least 10 weeks between applications of Spring, Summer, or Autumn feed.

The Pre-Seeder fertiliser is different - it can be applied 1 week before seeding, or at the time of seeding/overseeding. It lasts around 5-6 weeks. We advise waiting 6 weeks before your next treatment.

What if I'm late feeding my lawn?

Life gets busy - we get it! If you're a couple of weeks late, you might notice the grass looking slightly paler or growing more slowly, but don't panic.

As soon as you feed it at the next opportunity, it'll bounce right back.

Can I feed my lawn on the same day as mowing?

Yes, but follow these simple rules:

Always mow BEFORE feeding - never after. If you mow afterwards, you'll hoover up the fertiliser you've just put down.

If you have lots of weeds: Don't mow for 3 days before treatment, then wait another 3 days after. This gives the fertiliser time to work on the weeds.

In hot weather (25°C or above): Feed early morning or late afternoon/evening during daylight hours. Avoid the hottest part of the day to prevent scorching.

🚿 Application and Best Practices

Get the best results with proper application. From choosing a spreader to knowing when to water, these tips ensure your lawn gets the most from every feed.

How do I apply lawn fertiliser?

We always recommend using a fertiliser spreader for the best, most even coverage. Check out our video guides to find what works for you - from handheld spreaders for smaller lawns to push spreaders for larger areas.

What's the correct application rate?

We recommend 25-35g per square metre. Our Lawn Measurement Tool automatically calculates for 30g per m², which gives you a safety margin.

Important: Going slightly outside this range usually won't harm your lawn (provided you water it in properly), but it will waste product. Over-applying can scorch grass, so stick close to the recommended rate.

We can't accept liability for damage caused by excessive application.

💡 Pro Tip

Use our free Lawn Measurement Tool to get the exact amount you need. It's accurate, saves you money, and means you'll never run out halfway through!

Can I fertilise in the rain or on wet grass?

In light rain or on damp grass: Yes! Damp conditions are actually fine - they help the fertiliser absorb better, as long as you can keep the product dry in your spreader.

Avoid if:

  • It's torrential rain (may wash the fertiliser away)
  • Heavy rain is forecast and your lawn is prone to puddling
  • The ground is waterlogged or soggy
Do I need to water in the fertiliser?

Yes, watering helps prevent scorch and speeds up results.

For best results, water your lawn on the same day or within 48 hours of application - the sooner you water it in, the faster you'll see results. We recommend using a sprinkler for even coverage.

Relying on rain? You'll need a decent amount - at least 4-5mm of rain to properly dissolve the granules and wash them into the soil. A light drizzle won't be enough.

When will I see results?

Usually 7-10 days, though some products work faster than others.

You'll notice your grass becoming greener and more vibrant as the nutrients kick in.

Can I walk on my lawn after feeding?

Yes, but it's best to water it in first.

We also recommend keeping kids and pets off the lawn while you're applying the treatment and until it's fully dry. After that, it's completely safe for everyone to enjoy the garden again.

🐾 Safety for Kids, Pets, and Wildlife

Here's everything you need to know about using our products safely around children, pets, and garden wildlife.

⚡ Safety at a Glance

Kids, Dogs & Cats
✓ Safe
Once watered in and lawn is dry
Rabbits & Guinea Pigs
7 days
Keep off treated areas
Chickens, Ducks & Geese
✗ Don't treat
Areas where poultry graze
Is iGrow Carpet safe for children and pets?

Yes, our products are child and pet-friendly when used as directed.

Keep kids and pets off the lawn during application and until the treatment has been watered in and the lawn is fully dry. Once dry, it's completely safe for them to play on the grass.

I have a dog or cat - is it safe for them?

Dogs and cats are generally low risk once the fertiliser has been watered in and the lawn is dry. The main concern is contact with undissolved granules, which is why watering in matters.

If your dog or cat walks on the lawn before it's been watered, give their paws a quick rinse to avoid tracking anything indoors.

I have a rabbit, guinea pig, or tortoise that grazes on the lawn - is it safe?

These need a bit more caution because they eat grass. We recommend keeping rabbits and guinea pigs off treated areas for at least 7 days after application, even after watering in.

If your rabbit or guinea pig has a regular grazing area, you might want to either:

  • Treat that area separately and keep them off it for a week
  • Move them to a different part of the garden while the treated area settles
I keep chickens, ducks, or geese - can I use fertiliser?

Don't apply fertiliser to areas where poultry graze. They'll mistake the granules for seed or grit and eat them. If you keep poultry, either fence off your treated lawn or don't treat the areas they have access to.

Is it safe for wildlife like birds and hedgehogs?

When used as directed and watered in properly, our products are safe around garden wildlife.

Birds may peck at granules initially (they look like seeds), so watering in promptly helps prevent this.

🔧 Special Cases and Advanced Questions

Dealing with staining, scarifying, or liquid products? These advanced tips help you handle special situations like a pro.

Will the fertiliser stain my patio or driveway?

Our Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Pre-Seeder feeds are iron-free and don't stain. However, it's always good practice to brush or blow any stray granules off hard surfaces like driveways, patios, and paths.

Our iron-based products WILL stain hard surfaces - so keep them well away from paving, concrete, and decking.

Can I scarify or aerate after fertilising?

Yes, but follow the same rules as mowing: if your lawn has lots of weeds, leave 3 days either side of treatment to prevent scorching.

If there aren't many weeds, you're fine to scarify or aerate without waiting.

💡 Pro Tip

Planning a big lawn project? Do your scarifying or aerating first, then feed afterwards. Your lawn will recover faster with fresh nutrients available right away.

Do I need to water in liquid iron?

No, you don't need to water in soluble iron after spraying. Once applied and the leaves have dried, you're done. In fact, letting it sit on the grass blades helps it work better.

You can apply liquid iron when the lawn is damp or even wet - many people spray it in the rain or on wet grass, especially when blackening moss.

Do I need to water in liquid seaweed?

No, don't water it in. For best results, spray liquid seaweed and let it dry on the leaves - this allows the grass to absorb the nutrients directly through the blades.

Don't worry if it rains after application - some will wash off the leaves but it'll soak into the soil and feed the roots instead. The nutrients won't go to waste; your lawn benefits either way.

What if a child or pet accidentally eats fertiliser?

If a child or pet does ingest fertiliser, contact your GP, NHS 111, or vet immediately. Having the product packaging to hand will help them give you the right advice.

Most cases of accidental contact result in nothing more than mild stomach upset, but it's always best to seek professional advice.
