The Lockdown Lawn Transformation
March 2020. Lockdown hits, and suddenly everyone's staring at their lawn thinking "I could actually sort this out."
This two-part series documents a complete renovation from start to finish, filmed in real-time during those strange early pandemic days. We kicked things off in March, then followed up in April to show you exactly how the lawn responded. It's one of our classic transformations, and the techniques still hold up perfectly today.
Our Favourite Lawn Renovation of the Year
Some renovations just hit differently. This one's special.
Filmed back when Daniel was still on the team (you'll recognise it from the thumbnail), this project had everything: a challenging lawn, perfect weather, and that BBQ-day energy that made the whole thing feel like summer. It's still one of our most-watched renovations, and for good reason—the results were absolutely spot-on.
Great renovations need great nutrition. Our Seaweed Lawn Booster supports root development and stress recovery, helping new grass establish quickly after renovation work.
Spring Lawn Care Questions
When should I start spring lawn care in the UK?
Start when the soil temperature consistently reaches 6-8°C and grass begins actively growing, typically late February to early April depending on your location. In southern England, you might start in March; in Scotland and northern areas, April is more realistic. Watch your lawn rather than the calendar—when you're mowing regularly (every 10-14 days), the growing season has begun. Don't rush; treating dormant grass wastes products and can cause damage.
What order should I do spring lawn treatments?
The optimal sequence is: first mow (light cut to tidy), then scarify to remove thatch and moss, then aerate if the soil is compacted, then overseed any bare patches, then apply fertiliser, and finally iron if you want extra green-up. Wait 2-3 days between major treatments to let the lawn recover. If you're applying moss killer, do this before scarification so you're removing dead moss rather than spreading live spores. Never fertilise frozen or waterlogged ground.
Should I scarify in spring or autumn?
Both work, but they serve different purposes. Spring scarification removes winter moss and debris, opening up the lawn for the growing season ahead. Autumn scarification is typically heavier and forms part of a renovation programme with overseeding. If your lawn has significant moss, spring scarification is essential—but keep it lighter than autumn work. Heavy spring scarification risks leaving bare soil exposed to weed invasion during the peak growing season. For severe thatch problems, autumn is usually the better time for aggressive treatment.
Why is my lawn full of moss after winter?
Moss thrives in conditions where grass struggles: shade, poor drainage, compaction, low fertility, and acidic soil. Winter creates perfect moss conditions with wet soil, reduced grass growth, and limited sunlight. The moss was likely present before winter but becomes dominant when grass goes dormant. To fix it long-term, address the underlying causes—improve drainage, aerate compacted areas, raise the soil pH if acidic, and feed regularly to strengthen grass. Killing moss without fixing conditions just creates a cycle of reinfestation.
How soon after winter can I apply fertiliser?
Wait until grass is actively growing—applying fertiliser to dormant grass is wasteful and can damage roots. Look for consistent growth requiring regular mowing. In most UK areas, this means late March to mid-April for spring fertiliser. Soil temperature matters more than air temperature; grass roots become active around 6°C. Avoid fertilising waterlogged or frozen ground, as nutrients will either wash away or sit unavailable until conditions improve. Our Spring Starter Plus is specifically formulated for early-season application when growth is just beginning.
Can I overseed in spring?
Yes, but autumn is generally better for overseeding. Spring overseeding works if you have bare patches that need filling, but new seedlings will face summer heat and drought stress within months of germinating. If you overseed in spring, do it early (April) to give seedlings maximum establishment time before summer. Water consistently until grass is established, and be prepared to nurse new grass through any dry spells. For major renovation with heavy overseeding, autumn remains the preferred option because cooler temperatures and autumn rain support establishment.
